The best part of NaNoWriMo, without a doubt, is the community — the feeling of writing simultaneously with writers who have ideas as bright and batty as yours. I was also curious if I could follow a prompt to come up with stories that felt satisfying. Within a week I had already developed a habit of sitting down with my coffee in the morning and mashing out a new story each day, In addition to achieving a huge sense of satisfaction from the results, I have been surprised how the keywords created a puzzle that took me in directions I would not have otherwise gone.
The book has two-hundred pages, each dedicated to a new idea. The prompts are in the form of a title, followed by ten key words to work into a story on the provided blank lines. I experimented with approaches from seat-of-the-pants to plotting and found I could do both since the format was so open. With something to prompt you, there seemed to be no stress of staring at a blank page.
I have fallen into a pattern of choosing the most limiting word to set a scene or setting and then weaving the other words into that setting. It only takes about ten minutes to come up with several "what if" ideas that fit into a three act structure and I'm off. You don't have to limit yourself to short stories either. I haven't written in the book at all. I just set it beside my iPad and start typing.
My stories have ranged from five-hundred word flash fiction pieces to short stories averaging around 2. Some of these felt like good hooks for a first chapter in a full novel. As with any creative tool, each person's results will vary, but I think it was well worth the money and is a great little tool to get you writing today.
I bought this journal because it looked interesting. I did not realize how much fun it was going to be. Each page has a title and ten words that you build on for your story. It allows for so much creativity, but focuses you on brevity. Since the stories are only one page, the introduction, the hook, the climax and the ending must all fit on one page.
It is a great exercise for getting the creative juices flowing and is good for writer's block as well. You won't be writing a novel in this book. But you will have a lot of short stories to draw from.
